Jack Burton Carpenter since the childhood liked snow. Why? Yes at least because on Lond Island where it grew, during snowfalls usually cancelled employment at school.
When to Jack was seven years, parents have brought it for the first time on the known ski resort which was settling down in Vermont. The child was delighted, and these trips became regular. The present talent for skis was found out in it so to go for a drive it began very soon best not only in a family, but also in the small town.

But skis is for winter. In the summer the sports guy had other entertainments. Living at the Atlantic coast, Jack should take a great interest in surfing. Own board at it was not: it cost expensively enough, and parents did not wish to spend such money for a "puzzling" hobby. So Jack looked more and envied serferam, dreaming in due course to save up the necessary sum. And until then went for a drive on waves on cheaper boards with which should be operated laying, instead of standing.

Some years Jack were disaccustomed in a boarding school which was ended in due time by his father and the big brother. The Good child it was not - with might and main huliganil and badly studied. When we went for a drive with friends, we quite often altered the form of boards on purpose to raise their"efficiency", - Jack tells.

The hobby price - the broken finger - has not cooled it, and has only suggested to finish a design and to make snerfer more safe.

After school Jack has entered the university Colorado, dreaming to get to the well-known ski command of this educational institution. However in the first weeks of study he has managed to break three times a clavicle, and not having started at all to trainings. Dreams of a national team should be left, and together with them interest to study was gone also. Jack has held on year, and has then thrown university.

Considering the further life-byte, Burton has intended was to move in veterinary surgeons or grooms. However, having worked it is a little at factory where planted race horses, has understood, what is it not for it. The father (mother has died of a leukaemia when to Jack it was executed seventeen) hurried with a trade choice, and to it remains nothing how to arrive on evening branch in the New York university. Unloved job, however, has rendered to Jack the invaluable help. As obliges it had to communicate often with the people who have created successful business thanks to realisation of original idea. One of clients of firm, for example, has earned $5 million on manufacture of water mattresses and now was going to sell the company favourably. Talking to it, Jack caught time and again itself on thought, that it and itself can open own business. Ideas at it were, the small starting capital - remained from the grandmother in the inheritance $120 000 - too.

It has started to do breadboard models. But at first to Jack has turned up one businessman - to work as "babysitter" for one family from small town Stratton (State of Vermont) which contained pair of German shepherds and horses, and behind them the eye yes an eye was necessary. Within 1978 Jack worked over productivity increase though the first board was ready to send on sale only in the middle of December. Not that it had a heap of orders: from one shop one has arrived, and that has been excellent, as he has not had time to carry out timely delivery. Jack did not see snowboards on mountain-skiing slopes. Skiing was expensive pleasure - only to rise on mountain on the lift, it was necessary to pay 20 dollars.

He has decided to be engaged in target audience searches. Teenagers - here for whom Jack wished to invent special sports. It has bought the necessary equipment. Its then norm made 50 boards in day. First, it did not suffice money. Fortunately, there were some savings though it could not gain all present victories, even possessing the 20 thousand accumulation for that moment. Under then circumstances 120000 dollars have hardly sufficed it.

The second error has appeared that it, to put it mildly, has overestimated chances successfully to realise production. «I remember, I have developed the special scheme according to which (if I, of course, implicitly follow it) I should grow rich. Having estimated, that at everyday productivity in 50 boards, I will achieve conceived, there and then I employ two relatives and the friend on purpose to raise efficiency in what the third error consisted - it was not necessary to deal with people close and expensive to you.

Reverse of the medal in that case can appear that fact, that you will lose both friends, and a family, and it, you see, is more difficult, than to lose the usual employee «from the party», - Burton recollects. An exception was only his wife Donna whom some years have worked financial director Burton Snowboards, but then has left the company to open own grocery shop.

Its error was also that he up to the end has not understood a situation in the market. Jack has started to think: «it is fine, me 23 years. I become crazy on skiing. The market on which I work, consists precisely of the same people, as I». But in a reality it has appeared, that 23-year-old young men do not show the slightest interest to its undertaking, therefore children of years 15 who did not presume a board in cost of 88 dollars became clients exclusively.

In a word, already next winter Burton has decided to do boards under the price in 45 dollars, than has lowered production costs almost twice (on them there was no expensive covering). Them he has named the Backyard («the Back court yard»). It was necessary to infect with it one friend and relatives. Schoolboys and own passion - here everything, that at it was. Besides everything, the Backyard, it is necessary to tell, never used tremendous success, but has brought enough money that has rescued business from full breakdown.

In the meantime Burton continued to travel across New England on the van, but it already was to the full filled more expensive boards. Jack pestered tens the shops trading in ski accessories, and, being the first class master of the reference with a board, it had to show time and again how to cope with the invention. «As soon as I rose on a board, all were around amazed, exclaiming:« Vau, it really costs to give for it 88 dollars », - Jack tells.

In 1979 Burton together with friends-enthusiasts has taken part in competitions snerferov and has won. The cutting from the local newspaper with the reporting on this significant event decorates till now one of walls at head office Burton Snowboards.

Because of shortage of means Burton had to dismiss the first employees and to manage only own forces, only occasionally employing local schoolboys on time work. All company was located in one house. The industrial shop settled down in a shed, a warehouse - on an attic, office - in a dining room. And phone of service of technical support has been established directly in a bedroom, and Jack quite often had to rise at two o'clock in the morning to respond to a call of any teenager from the Western coast.

Approximately during same time Jack has refused the present surname - Carpenter - and Burton has replaced with its average name. It has gone on it to put an end to mess: people considered, that "Jack Burton Carpenter" means «Jack Burton, the carpenter». Actually, so it also was, as Jack did the first boards itself - from the beginning and up to the end.

Money all the same did not suffice, so Jack had to earn additionally the waiter, and to give tennis lessons in the summer. However he has not thrown business, persistently continuing to move a snowboard in weights. Rotary Jack considers 1980 when 700th board has been sold. It was yet success, but already solid achievement. Burton recollects, that, packing that board, he has thought: «Has come true …»
