After hundred twenty with superfluous years from the moment of the basis business school Uortona at Pensilvansky university (Wharton) still remains to one of the most dear and prestigious in the world. On widespread belief, the lucky beggar who managed to arrive there, can not worry about the career.

The statistics confirms this theory: by data rekrutingovyh the agencies, each graduate Uortona on the average receives three first class offers on job.

Business school Uortona is obliged by the existence to large American industrialist Joseph Wharton (1826-1909) who belonged to one of the oldest and influential families of Philadelphia. His career has begun in 19 years in the small notions company where in two years it has served to a post of the chief accountant. In 1847 Wharton together with the brother and more one partner has begun own business on manufacture of white lead. After some more years together with Joseph Metlokom it has opened brick-works, but has soon sold the share, having decided to work as the hired manager. Industrialists from Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) have invited Uortona to operate zinc mines. In 1853 the enterprise has collapsed, on its fragments Uorton has tried to create own company. He has leased the mines which have remained without supervision, modernised them, has written out experts from Belgium and has begun manufacture of zinc which became the largest in the country. Incomes have allowed Uortonu to get the nickel mine which also was settling down in Pennsylvania, and to construct the big processing factory in Kemdene (New Jersey). In passing filadelfijsky the businessman has started to put up money in small metallurgical company Bethlehem Iron Work and has gradually appropriated it.

When Joseph Uorton built own career, the business education as that simply did not exist. Preparation of the future bigwigs of the financial world passed or already on a workplace, or in the form of an apprenticeship, usually in one dynasty. However by the end of XIX century the share of the family companies began to decrease, and in the American business the requirement for the qualified hired managers has sharply grown. Shortage of administrative shots very much disturbed Joseph Uortona as the owner of business: it did not have a son to whom it could pass reins of government the company. In 1881 Uorton has addressed to a management of Pensilvansky university with the offer to open special school which would become a smithy of shots for the American industry developing by mad rates.

The offer was accepted favourably (as Uorton has accompanied its serious sum on those times in $100 000), and the business school named in its honour, has opened doors for the first pupils.

In 1885 when upgrade of the American navy fleet has begun, Uortonu it was possible to win the contract on delivery of armored sheets. The company has been renamed in Bethlehem Steel Company and thanks to the defensive order soon became the largest manufacturer of the reservation in the world. In 1901 Uorton has sold a controlling interest to the well-known industrialist Charlzu Shvabu, however on rest has not left and till last days supervised over remained enterprises.

Joseph Uorton was remembered to contemporaries not only as the brilliant businessman, but also as the talented scientist, one of the most authoritative experts in the branch. Its interests were not settled by metallurgy. According to historians, he was interested in industrial fishery and cranberry cultivation, wrote quite good verses, fine understood jewels. Till the end of life Uorton remained the inveterate traveller. In 1905 when to it was already under eighty, the aged industrialist has alone reached on a canoe one of silver mines belonging to it in Nevada. Joseph Uorton in 1909 has died, having left after itself national property - the business school named in its honour.

Throughout all history business school Uortona was famous for strong teaching structure. In 1909 professor Herbert Hess to whom was hardly for twenty, has started to read a course there, devoted to advertising and art of sales. Subsequently it became the largest authority on this area. In 1931 Hess has published work «Advertising: its economic bases, philosophy and receptions» in which investigated psychological aspects of marketing. Hess was one of the first supporters of idea that business should adapt for inquiries of consumers.

Other professor Uortona - George Taylor, too became "father". It has based the American system of the permission of labour conflicts. In 1931 has helped to stop large strike on chulochnoj to factory in Aberle, having offered the decision, arranged both parties. Subsequently Taylor was the intermediary even in 2000 strikes which have ended peace by. It advised five presidents, and in 1995 it have switched on in a hall of glory of a Ministry of Labour of the USA.

Two professors of school became the Nobel winners. In 1971 the award was received Sajmon by the Smith - the well-known economist, in 1930th years teaching in Uortone. In 1946 there was its job «the National product of the USA since 1869 up to now» which became classics of the economic literature. On memoirs of contemporaries, the Smith was the brilliant teacher, and students struggled occupying the first rows at its lectures. In 1980 of the Nobel Prize other professor from Uortona - Lawrence Klein, one of the most known experts in the field of economic statistics has been awarded.

However, Uorton can be proud not only "fathers", but also children. Among its graduates many the well-known businessmen and politicians. From nowadays well it is possible to mention, for example, David Pottraka, the president and from corporation Charles Schwab; Jotaro Kobajasi, the chairman of board Fuji Xerox; Henninga Shulte-Nojle, the chairman of board Allianz AG; Bryan Roberts, president Comcast, and many other things. In total business school Uortona have ended more than 77 000 persons from 139 countries of the world, including from Russia.

For hundred twenty years the corporate culture of school varied time and again. For example, the graduate of 1954 Jack Kerli recollects, that during its time to have supper in a student's dining room it was possible only in the presence of a jacket and a tie. Najvi Amin, ended Wharton in 2002, listens to these stories with amazement: as she said, now in a dining room it is possible to be declared though in a pyjamas, and it does not shock anybody. In general Wharton times Kerli, strongly differs from realities of today: among its fellow students practically there were no women, the Afro-Americans, foreigners. It describes a former building of school as conservative and old-fashioned, though also functional whereas the new case is equipped by last word of technics.

However in memoirs of the graduates who have ended Uorton with a difference almost in fifty years, there is also something the general. Before release Jack Kerli has received three offers on job, including from typing then turns IBM which it and has accepted. Najvi Amin also has received steadfast interest hedhanterov and as a result has got in Morgan Stanley. Pupils Uortona in great demand at all times: newspaper Wall Street Journal in 2003 has put an educational institution on the first place in a rating of the most popular at rekruterov business schools.

However, the school behind the first places in ratings now does not pursue. In April of this year Patrick Harker has officially declared, that in Uortone will not give any more electronic addresses of the students to employees Business Week. The similar decision was accepted also by the Harward business school. Protecting the point of view, Harker has noticed, that struggle for the first lines in lists of the best quite often forces educational institutions to forget about their present mission. «The success of school should be estimated not in a place with which it occupies in a rating, and on achievements of its students, teachers and graduates», - he has concluded.
